If you have just decided to homeschool there is a good chance you are quickly becoming overwhelmed by all the information being thrown your way. The best advice I can give you is to take it one step at a time. So, instead of putting ALL the information into one post, I am going to break them up into steps. You're welcome.
The first step is to get to know your state's homeschool requirements. Each state is different. Tennessee has fairly low regulations and they are as follows:
1. School is required for ages 6-17
2. Notification of intent to homeschool is required to be filed with the superintendent. This can be found on the Tennessee Department of Education's website.
3. Parents must obtain and show proof of a high school or college diploma or GED.
4. You must teach your child 180 days per school year.
5. Proof of immunization OR a religious exemption form must be filed.
6. In grades 5, 7, and 9, your student must take standardized tests administered by the commissioner of education or someone designated by the commissioner.
How you go about filing paperwork will depend on how you choose to register your homeschool. You can register with the local school system, join an umbrella school, or an accredited online school. They will oversee your homeschooling to make sure your students are fulfilling the government educational requirements seen above and provide school transcripts based on the grades you give them each semester. When you choose to use an umbrella school or accredited online school, you will file necessary paperwork through them.
It's important to know that as a homeschool parent, you have rights. You have the right to teach your child in the manner and style that you see best. There is an organization called the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). They passionately advocate for the freedom to homeschool as well as offer educational support and legal protection. They offer services to help with special needs, learning disabilities, and high school.
