A common question I hear about homeschooling is "What about sports?" I've been homeschooling my three children for seven years and they have all been active participators in athletics. In Cookeville, there are several options outside of public school-affiliated sports. And if your child wants to play on the public school team, they can! As stated at HSLDA.org, "The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) permits a homeschooled student to participate in public school extracurricular athletics if that student's parent has filed a notice of intent for that student and has otherwise complied with the requirements of Tennessee Code Annotated § 49-6-3050(b)." Basically, call the school administration and ask what you need to sign and have an up-to-date physical. There are also many city, church, and privately affiliated athletic programs to join. I have created a simple list of what I know to be available in Cookeville. Each of these programs can be found via Google or Facebook.
Edited to add: If a student is registered with the local school board as an independent student (files an NOI), they will be required to test in the fifth, seventh, and ninth grades (sports or not). If a student is registered with an umbrella school, they will not be required to test in those grades (sports or not) as long as they don't submit an NOI. Umbrella school students are no longer required to submit an NOI (as required in the past) to try out and participate in public school sports.
